While September was Suicide Awareness month, tonight Texas Tropical Behavioral Health and The Cameron County Mental Health Task Force hosted a Suicide awareness event at UTRGV Brownsville. I want to thank them for giving me the opportunity to speak to our community about the Court’s role in mental health emergencies, specifically suicide intervention through civil commitments.
It was a very somber event that included a remembrance walk and lantern lighting. Hearing from a family who lost their 12 year old son to suicide was heartbreaking, as was hearing of youth ages 9-14 who also took their lives.
We as individuals and as a court will continue to look for ways to bring mental illness to light and to fight against suicide.
