Mental Health Courts

In 2019 the Texas Legislature passed SB 562, which added section 125.005 to the Texas Government Code. This section requires counties with a population of over 200k to establish a mental health court program and to seek funds to pay the costs of the program. Cameron County established the first mental health diversion court in the jurisdiction in 2017. The court is overseen by Judge Sheila Garcia Bence.
